A Mediterranean-Inspired Fitout for Blackhearts & Sparrows
2024 International Architecture & Design Awards Winner
With over a dozen locations across Melbourne’s inner suburbs, Blackhearts & Sparrows is the one-stop shop for exclusive, boutique wines and spirits. Stocking countless local drink brands and rare imported finds, they curate a unique browsing experience to help their customers find exactly what they are looking for. With a new location opening in Elwood, we teamed up once again to create a beautiful shop fitout.
Creating Something Fresh Yet Familiar
When working with multi-location businesses, it’s important to create a space that feels familiar yet different. Branding and store layouts must feel familiar and recognisable to existing customers. Interior design should follow these principles while also introducing fresh, original elements that work to attract new customers into the space.
Our challenge was to design an immersive setting that transports visitors away from the humdrum of daily life, while seamlessly functioning as a retail environment. To achieve this balance, our team leaned into the timeless Mediterranean aesthetic, elevated with modern design techniques.
A Nod to the Grecian Coast
The interior is adorned with azure hues and subtle textured paints, reminiscent of traditional Mediterranean coastal houses and laneways. These colours are applied to both walls and ceilings, evoking blue skies with subtle cloudy wisps.
The flooring features glossy blue tiles that mimic the reflective surface of the ocean. Strategically installed overhead track lighting enhances the illusion of walking over the glistening ocean, further reinforcing the Mediterranean ambience.
To add an earthy presence reminiscent of Mediterranean cobblestone streets, the design incorporates luxurious stones, terrazzo, and terracotta tiles. These materials are used for flooring and accent features, contributing to the overall authenticity and richness of the design.
