Contemporary healthcare design is moving away from the dull and rigid. Healthcare fitouts are now shifting towards creating spaces that evoke feelings of calmness, safety and healing. Our client, Centre of Strength and Wellness, needed a fitout where they could provide a positive, uplifting, holistic path to physical and mental strength. We were tasked to do just that when acclaimed design duo, Ben & Ben, approached us to take the bones of an old car mechanic warehouse and transform it into the elegant, light-filled healthcare practice they designed.
Partnering with Ben & Ben
Ben & Ben’s vision for the design of this particular healthcare fitout ‘focuses on the solid form, materiality and play on light’- namely, the specification of light timber grain and a soft white colour palette across the joinery and internal structures. In the same way, the ebb and flow of solid form was emulated through the seemingly endless curved surfaces, and natural soft light reflecting off every corner of the space.
Compliant across all areas
When building a healthcare fitout, applying for the correct permits and understanding the relevant planning regulations is crucial to the successful delivery of the project. Part of our involvement in this project meant applying for the change-of-use permits needed to start the physical build. Unlike conventional commercial spaces, healthcare fitouts require a high standard of compliance amongst materials, finishes and floor plans. With our teams' expertise, we made sure all elements of the initial design were compliant without compromising the mood and flow of the space.
A Christmas affair
With this project running through the Christmas period, we needed to carefully plan the supply of materials and the contracting of trades considering the limited resources available during this time. Fortunately, the strong relationship we have with our contractors gave us priority as well as the foresight to plan ahead for the build of the fitout. Conscious of longer supplier lead times, we also had enough time to prepare and source alternatives.
Cost-effective solutions without the compromise
At Canopy Fitouts, we always look for smart solutions to work with existing structures and eliminate unnecessary costs. To demonstrate, we initially had planned to incorporate bench seating into the communal restroom facilities. However, what the plans did not account for was the unsightly waste pipes and the costs associated with removing it from the healthcare fitout. We solved both issues by building the bench seating and concealing the waste pipe, resulting in saved costs and otherwise hiding a potential eye-sore.
