St John of God Geelong Hospital

A Legacy of Care, Transformed Through Design

For over 45 years, St John of God Geelong Hospital has long been a cornerstone of compassionate healthcare. From its roots with the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart in the 1970s to its evolution under the care of the Sisters of St John of God, this hospital has continually fostered a deep connection with its Geelong community.

With an ever-growing population in Victoria’s southwest, the hospital needed to undergo an expansion and upgrade of its existing facilities. We sought to honour their healthcare legacy by creating a medical fitout that embodies healing, comfort, and professionalism.

A Strategic Approach to Comfort and Care

Our design process began with a clear vision: to craft a welcoming and tranquil environment that prioritises the patient experience while ensuring staff functionality. Drawing inspiration from the calming blues of the hospital's logo, we integrated a soothing colour palette throughout the space, creating a serene atmosphere that establishes trust from the moment a patient enters.

Thoughtful Design Elements

Expanding beyond colour psychology we also created physical, multifunctional elements to serve both patients and staff.

  • Patient-Centric Spaces: Waiting areas feature ergonomic seating paired with abundant natural light, promoting relaxation and reducing stress. Pendant lighting provides soft, even illumination that is functional and aesthetically pleasing.
  • Acoustic & Visual Harmony: Feature carpets with beautiful patterns not only enhance the design but also improve acoustics, minimising noise to maintain a tranquil setting.
  • Natural Warmth: Timber accents in the wall panelling, furniture, and the reception desk bring organic warmth and sophistication to the space. These natural materials bend sound through the space, limiting how far chatter can travel. These intentional acoustic elements allow patients to have private conversations with staff without fear of being overheard.
  • Reception at the Heart: The reception area serves as a welcoming first point of contact. A sleek yet approachable desk is complemented by tasteful decor and thoughtfully arranged seating to ensure a professional yet comforting environment.
